Connecticut Wins!

The fat lady has sung and tonight, deep in the heart of Texas, Connecticut's star is shinning even brighter than it has all season with a 53-47 win over Stanford.

Leading all scores for Connecticut was Wade Trophy winner Maya Moore and her 23 points and 11 rebounds. Naismith Trophy winner Tina Charles finished the game with nine points and 11 rebounds.

Stanford was let by Kayla Pedersen with her 15 points and 17 rebounds. Nnemkadi Ogumike and Joslyn Tinkle each finished with 11 points. Ogwumike also finished with the team's second double-double with 13 rebounds.

Connecticut didn't finish their dream season by the same margin of victory as they had done throughout the season, but they walked away with a solid win and are going back to Storrs, CT., as National Champions for a second consecutive year.

That's it from the Alamodome with a final score of 53-47.

X-Factors?

Everyone knows that Stanford's go-to players are Jayne Appel and Nnemkadi Ogwumike. Yet with both of these players being shut down in the paint tonight, someone else would need to step up and have a great night.

In these final minutes, there have been two players to do this - Kayla Pedersen and Jeanette Pohlen.

Both players just hit three-pointers to help close Connecticut's gap.

Now Stanford is not taking any chances with letting Connecticut go on a shooting spree from outside. Instead they fouling the Huskies as soon as they get the ball so they are forced to shoot from the free-throw line.

Time on the clock: 1:08

Stanford 40

Connecticut 48

Stay tuned.

Enough Time?

There are less than five minutes left and Connecticut is on top with a comfortable lead.

Stanford is having problems scoring in the paint and it is how they are missing those valuable shots from two or three-feet away that are killing them.

While Connecticut fans are probably very happy with their team's current lead, the question on a lot of people's minds has to be, can Stanford have a late-game surge to get the lead back?

Time on the clock: 3:30

Stanford 31

Connecticut 44

Stay tuned.

Less Than 10 Minutes!

There are less 10 minutes left and with as good as Connecticut is playing in this second half, this game is still too close to call.

Stanford's Jayne Appel has yet to put some points on the scoreboard and she looks like she is in pain with her hurt ankle.

Connecticut's Maya Moore has come alive in the second half with 13 more points to bring her current total to 18.

Time on the clock: 8:29

Stanford 27

Connecticut 33

Stay tuned

Second Half Surge

While Connecticut did not look very good in the first half and playing the way they normally do, they appear to be refreshed and ready to go in this second half.

The Huskies have come out with guns blazing and after hitting most of their shots, they have taken a slight lead.

Time on the clock: 13:39

Stanford 22

Connecticut 25

Stay tuned

Vice Presidential Halftime

We are getting ready for the second half and while usually fans are entertained by each of the team's pep bands and cheerleaders, in this game the fan was mesmerized by watching a very special attendant move from one side of the arena to the other.

That very special spectator is Vice President Joe Biden.

In addition to have him in attendance, earlier in the afternoon I saw former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice at the media hotel.

Most everyone has heard about President Barack Obama filling out a women's bracket this year, but I'd love to ask Biden who he had on his women's bracket.

Stay tuned.

What A Half!

This is not a mis-type in any way --- Stanford is still leading.

It is halftime and for the first time this entire season, Connecticut now have an idea what their opponents have felt all through this season - frustrated.

The first half was not pretty for the Huskies as they shot 5-for-28 from the field or 17.9%. Tiffany Hayes and Maya Moore are leading all scores with five points a piece.

Stanford on the other hand is finding the bottom of the net. The Cardinal are led by Kayla Pedersen's 10 points while the team as a whole is shooting 25.8% from the field.

The game may be moving in slow motion at times, but both teams are being very methodical in every move they make.

More in the second half.

Stanford 20

Connecticut 12

She Wants The Ball!

One of the reason why Stanford is currently ahead in this game is because of their rebounding. In particular it is Nnemkadi Ogwumike that is controlling the boards with nine rebounds already.

It's not just the Connecticut players that Ogwumike is grabbing rebounds away from, but also some of her own teammates. It's great to see this kind of focus on one of the most fundamental aspects of the game.

Time on the clock: 3:40

Stanford 18

Connecticut 12

Stay tuned.
