In 2005, Mike Roach was nearly killed. Thursday, the electric forward scored one of two Saint Louis goals in the Billikens' first-round win over Missouri St in the NCAA First Round on Thursday. It's kind of funny that a team ranked #4 in the nation (UCSB) goes unseeded into the tournament while a team from their own conference (UCI) that finished below them in the regular season standings gets seeded. It's also funny that a team from a lesser conference (USD - WCC)also gets seeded and a 1st rd bye. But what's really hilarious is when the unseeded team beats the 11th seeded on the road while at the same time, the lesser team from their own division gets beat on their home field. When will the committee start to respect UCSB? Not sure how many National Championships or streaks of 9 consecutive playoff appearances USD or UCI have - but I'd guarantee it's less than UCSB.
The ranking system is a joke. UCI gets a bye, plays at home and loses in real "first round", and they are ranked 16? Meantime, Indana, Duke, Stanford, UCSB, Maryland, Portland, and BC are all not ranked? Rankings are largely based on record, of course. But logically, if we take the UCI strength of schedule vs. that of Indiana - I would hardly say its comparable. Maybe that's why newcomers are losing in their first game, while the teams with tougher schedules are seasoned teams that have proven their abilities through a rigorous schedule. You don't get to be the best by playing the weakest. Teams need to be tested throughout the season. A fantastic corollary is the student who gets a 4.0 GPA by taking all the basic classes, vs. the student who takes advanced and honors courses and gets a 3.0 GPA. I'd take the 3.0 GPA student any day.
