Washington pulled off the 3-2 victory over Florida this evening to claim its first NCAA softball championship title in the WCWS championship series.

Danielle Lawrie was named WCWS Most Outstanding Player. The pitcher surrendered two runs, one earned run, eight hits, three walks and recorded eight strikeouts.

  Washington exploded on the scoreboard this evening, claiming an 8-0 win over Florida in game one of the WCWS championship series.

The Huskies' offense was led by Ashley Charters who went 3-for-3 at the plate, with two runs, a home run and two RBIs. Her homer, ninth on the season, came in the top of the sixth, scoring Lauren Greer on the blast.

UW pitcher Danielle Lawrie, once again, dominated in the circle. The junior's complete game shutout featured a two-hitter with three walks and 12 strikeouts.

Both teams will face again in game two of the WCWS championship series on Tuesday, June 2, at 7 p.m. CDT.

Washington leads Florida 8-0 in the top of the seventh. Usually, by NCAA rules, a softball game is called when a team claims an 8-run lead after five innings. However, that does not apply in the WCWS championship series.

Everyone, including fans, teams, umpires and field crew, assumed the run rule was to be applied. Both teams lined up to shake hands, fans were leaving the stands, umpires were walking off the field, and field crew members were already taking out first and second bases.

Florida did place a runner in scoring position for the first time this evening. In the bottom of the sixth, Aja Paculba reached second, but the sophomore was left on base.

UW sophomore Morgan Stuart knocked in Kimi Pohlman and Jennifer Salling to give the Huskies a 6-0 advantage in the top of the fifth. Stuart has collected four doubles in the WCWS, which is a series record.

With the bases loaded in the top of the third inning, Washington's Jennifer Salling singled and scored Niki Williams and Ashley Charters.

The play didn't end, as aggressive base running by the Huskies provoked a throwing error by Florida catcher Kristina Hilberth whose throw to second ended up going deep into center field, allowing Kimi Pohlman and Salling to come home. Washington now leads Florida 4-0.

Washington and Florida did not produce any runs in the first two innings of Game One of the WCWS Championship Series. Huskies pitcher Danielle Lawrie struck out the side in the bottom of the first.

Game One of the WCWS Championship Series begins tonight, featuring Washington and Florida in the best-of-three series. Fans already were lining up for the gates to open at 6 p.m. CDT.
