Preparing for Bethel

The last time we played Bethel was before Christmas and I think we've come a long way since then. Our first real "home" game played on our campus ice was against Bethel when we tied them 1-1. The next night we beat them 1-0 at their rink. This Friday will we be traveling up to the SuperRink in Blaine once again to play them in a non-conference game. I am looking forward to seeing if we can keep up the intensity that we played with in our upset against Amherst.

One thing that's for sure is that this week's practices have been high intensity. Monday was a very difficult practice as we had different skating drills interspersed with competitive 2-1 and 3-2 drills. I made the mistake of only having a bowl of cereal early in the morning on Monday as my only source of food throughout the day. Needless to say I got pretty lightheaded during such a difficult practice. I decided I'd memo myself to never again forget to eat on a Monday.

The rest of the week went really well. I think we are improving on our power play and have a good grip on our systems now. We'll see if we can make good things happen against Bethel as they are some of our better competition in the conference. I have no doubt that if we skate as hard as we did against Amherst that we will be able to succeed in this weekend's match-up. Of course we have to be ready for a good goalie because Bethel's is one of the best we face.

Outside of practice, I am not taking a January Interim Experience course so I have a lot of free time. I have spent a lot of my week practicing for the LSAT, working in the Sports Information Department at Gustavus. and having board game nights with friends. Some of the girls on our team also had birthdays this week, so we all went out to Olive Garden to celebrate. Of course after that meal, I felt like I didn't need to eat for another two days.

Another hockey-related thing our team is thinking of doing during our January free-time is to have a re-match scrimmage against a boys team that we played in December. Some of the basketball and football boys can skate and wanted to see how they matched up against us. We beat them badly in a scrimmage before Christmas, but I guess they want another shot. The first game was actually extremely fun, so we are thinking we will humor them with a re-match. Apparently if they win this next game, the boys have threatened they will re-name our rink from Don Roberts Ice Rink to the Land-O-Lakes Butter Pond. Of course, we find this a pretty funny as the possibility of the boys winning is slim to none.

It snowed a little last night so we will be loading the bus a little earlier than usual just to account for bad roads and driving time. Bethel is our only game this weekend and we are hoping it will prepare us for a tough schedule next week when we play UW-Stevens Point and St. Thomas.
