First Game in the Books

Last Friday was our first game of the season.  We played Western Kentucky University at E.A. Diddle Arena.  The game went well until about seven minutes remained.   After that point we never could get back into the game.  We ended up losing the game 95-78.  WKU is a very athletic team and they had some very good players.

All though we did lose the game, it was a good experience for our team.  I think we learned a lot about ourselves from this game and what we need to work on to improve throughout the season.  One thing that we learned by playing at WKU is that Ashley Hayes is a great player.  She played a great game and she finished the night with 31 points.  WKU had a hard time guarding her and Ashley took advantage of that.

Another positive from the game is that we shot the ball extremely well as a team. We also learned some things that we need to work on.  A couple of those things are rebounding and defense.  I think we will do better at these two areas as the season progresses.  The first game of the season was exciting, but now we have to focus on our next opponent which is Bethel.

Finally Starting the Season

Time has flown by since the last time I blogged.  Our team has been practicing hard and we are getting ready for our first game tomorrow.  I cannot believe that our season is starting tomorrow.  It seemed like yesterday that we were on the track running for preseason conditioning.

Tomorrow is our first game of the regular season.  We are playing Western Kentucky University.  They participated in the NCAA Tournament last year so they are a good team.  I love playing at WKU because I played there so much during my high school playing days at Clinton County High School.  Another reason I like playing there is because I have a lot of family members and people from my hometown that come to the game.

Everybody is excited to start the season.  This will be a good experience for the freshmen because we are playing a good team.  They will learn a lot from this game and it will only help our team in the long run.  Not only is this our first game, but it is also our first road trip of the season.  It only takes a couple of hours to get to Bowling Green so we will not have a long bus ride compared to trips we will take later on.

On a sadder note, my grandmother passed away this past week.  I just want to thank everybody that prayed for my family during this time.  I also want to thank my teammates and coaches for all the encouragement that they gave me and my sister.  It is truly a blessing to be on a team that cares about you and is always there for you.

Promise and Loss

Last Saturday we got our first scrimmage out of the way and it was a success.  We played well for the beginning of November and we were able to see how our newcomers react to game situations.  Reviewing the video has already helped us improve.  As we watched film at the beginning of the week we saw we still have work to do and we cannot be content.

During practice this week we all made adjustments. I feel, playing in the scrimmage, the freshmen have a better sense of the way Racer basketball is played and what it will take to defend our Ohio Valley Conference Championship. The freshmen have had to make a quick transition, but they have been doing well with the transition.

I remember how tough that transition is and the rest of the team is working hard to help them make a successful transition.

This week was also marked with the loss of a Racer Basketball family member.  One of our freshmen lost her mother, as she passed away Sunday night.  We are deeply saddened by her loss, because everyone connected to the Racer Basketball program is part of one big family.  As a team we drove to the wake to show our support for her and her family in this horrible time.  This has reminded us that tomorrow is not promised and we must live for each moment.
