Postseason Play on the Way... HA!

Well our regular season has now come to an end and in some exciting fashion.  We have tied our wins to that of last years with 36.  So we are now 36-4!

On Tuesday our games got pushed to Sunday.  But on Thursday we had a double header at Brandice.  We swept them and put up a team total of 5 homeruns in the 2 games.

Then on Saturday we swept Eastern Connecticut to give us at least a share o the LEC (Little East Conference) Regular season champs.  It was also senior day in which we celebrated our lone senior Kelli McCartin.  With the wins she couldn't have been happier!

On Sunday we got up at the crack of dawn to drive to Western Connecticut.  When we swept them we clinched the title of LEC regular season champs once again for the 5th year running.

THen Sunday night we had to drive to Eastern Connecticut to finish our tied game with Keene.  Although we lost the game, we didnt really lose anything else.  We are still 5 year running champs of the LEC conference.  And our LEC record is 13-1.  Not somehting to be truely upset about at all!

Practice yesterday was nice although it was hot!  Some of the girls have allergies on the team which makes everyone sneeze alot.

We have practice today and its all about our hitting.  It will probably be a longer practice seeing as yesterdays was shorter but well see.

Tomorrow we play at 10am in the first round of the LEC tournament.  We play Southern Maine who will be gunning for us, as is with most other teams as well.  IT should be an exciting weekend!

GO RIC :)

Coming to an end...

Well this past week has been a little tough for RIC softball.  Last Thursday we suffered our first lost since Florida.  We had a 19 game win streak going and it all came to an end with a lost to Westfield State College.  It's actually kind of a funny story seeing as last year the same thign happened to us.  Westfield beat us last year to close off an 18 game win streak.  Next year will be different!  :)

We added 4 more wins after that loss to Westfield though.  Two games against Plymouth State and two more against UMass Boston.  This brings our overall record to 30-3-1.

Yesterdays games at Western Connecticut got postponed to this Sunday at 1 because of the rain we got all day yesterday.  Tomorrow we play Brandice, at Brandice at 4.  We didn't play them last year so it will be a new experience for both teams.  Their coach came to one of our games earlier in the season so we'll see how she plays us.

Saturday is our senior day and we play Eastern Connecticut at 1.  Milky is our only senior this year so needless to say we are going all out for her :)  I'll post some pictures next time with out decorations for her :)

Then on Sunday we will play Western CT at Western to finish up our regular season play.  We want to break 40 wins this year too so we will really have to push along through this week of tough games.  We came close last year with 36 wins but this week we could tie it if we run the table... :)  Here we go!

GO RIC :)

Still going strong..

Well, we keep adding onto our record.  We are now 25-2-1 :)  we are on a roll now.  We just won our games today 10-2 in 6 innings and 15-0 in 5 innings.  Hopefully this keeps going as the season starts to wind down.

For the rest of the week we have a double header at Westfield State on Thursday, a double header on Saturday at home vs Plymouth State and a double header make up games at UMass Boston on Sunday :)  Hopefully there are a lot more wins coming in the rest of the week :)

GO RIC :)

Rain, rain, go away...

Well, we are now 18-2 overall and it hasn't stopped raining since last week.  Our Saturday games up at Keene got postponed to this Friday but I don't even know if we will be able to get those games in.  Supposodly their field can get swampy with a little bit of rain, and with the amount of rain we have gotten (and snow in NH) I can only imagine what their field looks like.

Tomorrow we are supposed to be playing Johnson and Whales University, but again with all of this rain who knows at this point.  If all of our games go off this week as planned, we will have to play 8 games this week.  Just like in FL, so I think we can manage but it's still a lot of games nonetheless.

On a high note we have 7 girls who are batting high .200 to high .400.  We are finally starting to hit the ball as a team! :)

Haha! I almost forgot, we played a joke on coaches on April Fools Day and it was so funny.  It consisted of the entire team (all 21 of us) going 35 mins late to practice, running through campus with all of our equipment from the previous days games, walking through the library to spy on coaches, and to top it all off, practice was kickball haha!  It was so funny.  We ignored the coaches and played kickball for practice.  Then they locked us on the field, but it was ok, at least they couldn't get the sprinklers turned on!  Haha

Moving right along...

So now we are 14-2 with a 8 game win streak at home.  It's nice how the team is coming together now.  We have finally started to put up more than 5 or 6 runs a game.  The past 4 games we have scored at least 10 runs each game.  Finally our bats are coming around!

Check out our web page for team stats.  Also, we have the games we have played at home on video from the broadcast that we have so if you're interested go to www.ric.edu/athletics and check out the softball page :)

Back from FL and ready to go...

Last week I couldn't write because we were in FL and the hotel we stayed at had no internet!  Talk about being behind technologically... Ha ha!

^ RIC in FL :)

Anyways, last week was so much fun!  We played 8 games, finishing 6-2.  We beat Ithaca who was a ranked team (and it should make our ranking go up :)  ) but then we lost to Cortland (the number 6 team in the nation) Hopefully our ranking increases despite the other lose we had to Babson.

^ Me on deck

Besides the games, we had a fun day of relaxation the first day we got there.  The whole team was out in the sun, catching some rays by the pool side :)  Even Coach Ken dropped by and was catching some sun :)

^ Me catching

We got to practice really late that night, about an hour and a half late, due to Coach Maria's hassle with getting the van and trying to ind the field but eventually we found it, even if we almost got into a couple accidents along the way haha!  Also, there was van vs van mini golf!  My van won :)  And Coach Ken's van was so mad at us.  The night ended with alot of the girls mooning each other as we drove back to the hotel haha!

^ Coach Maria's van about to kick butt in mini golf :)

We also went to Magic Kingdom after our last game :)  It was so much fun!  I was with one of the freshman Steph, who is a seasoned veteran at Disney and we had a blast going on all the rides and taking numerous pictures :)  Then me and Steph went on this sky coaster thing that was 300ft in the air, then drops you.  It was so much fun!  Jenna, AB, and Doni had done it earlier in the week so Steph and I had to keep up with them haha!

^ Me and Steph at Magic Kingdom :)

Then later that night we didn't go to sleep because we had to be at the vans at 3am to go to the airport for a flight at 6am.  What a long day/night/day it was haha!  But so much fun!

^ Me, Steph and Danielle on the airplane :)

Since we have been back we have had 3 practices and tomorrow is our first home double header vs Salve Regina.  Hopefully the predicted rain holds off for a little so we can get the games in :)  Saturday we have another double header at home but I'm not sure who we are playing.  Next Tuesday is the same deal.  Hopefully 6 more wins are in the near future for us!

Until next time,

GO RIC :)

5 DAYS!!!

5 Days to Florida!  Everyone on the team is so excited to get down there and play some games.  We are all definitely ready for some nice warm weather too!  Let me just tell you what has happened in the last week...

Well, last Thursday and Friday we actually had practice outside on our field.  Granted the infield was a little muddy but the outfield was nice to practice on.  We all got some hitting done in our little hut thing that we have inbetween the baseball and softball fields.  So practice was so nice those two days...

Saturday we were inside because practice was at 6 so it was dark outside, and it was a little chilly.  We scrimmaged freshys vs upperclassman with our pitchers rotating between teams.  It was really funny.  We had girls in every which position.  It was just a nice and relaxed practice...

Sunday... again scrimmaged inside.  No big deal.  A little chilly outside.  Some talk of a storm during the night made us think, "Maybe no practice Monday??"

Monday... STORM! BAD!  RIC cancelled classes ALL DAY.  Which is HUGE because RIC never closes campus, especially not all day.  Well guess what?  We had practice anyways.  I was completely stuck in the parking lot.  THey hadn't plowed yet so my car, a little grand am, was trying to drive through a foot and a half of snow... Not gunna happen!  Coach had to come pick me up with her jeep, along with like 9 other girls outta the 21 on our team... HA.  Oh well.

Yesterday we had pool workout.  The guy that "trains" us is crazy!  He was in the Olympic trails last summer so he thinks he's like so cool ha.  He's a good trainer and all, but really has no feelings off how painful some of the activities are to some of the girls with like, tendontis in their shoulders, achilles tendon issue, ankle issue, and one of the girls just has shoulder surgery.  No compassion.  Luckily, it was the last one we will have :)

Practice, Practice, Practice... and Illness...

The past week of practice has been quite hectic.  The gym we use for practice is three basketball courts with a track on the outside.  During the week, we only get the middle basketball court.. for all 21 of us.  It's a tight squeeze to get all our hitting in, do some agility work, and let our pitcher throw, but some how we manage to do it!

Well, this year the gym is even tighter because we have to share our practice time with 1 or 2 other teams.  So yesterday, for instance, we had to share the gym with the baseball team and track.  We were considered the "other" practice team yesterday so we got a little creative.  We did our agility work way off in the corner out of everyones way.  Then in another corner we hit.  Pitchers threw under a broken basketball hoop that no one could use anyways.  And after an hour of that we all put on our bathing suits and went for a swim!

We have a 'trainer' (I don't know if he is just a lifeguard or an actual trainer here at the school) that tells us what to do in the water.  So we walked back and forth from the shallow end to the deep end, Then we ran.  We created whirlpools then switched direction.  We used water weights for an upper body workout too!  Overall, its a nice workout and it makes all of us laugh at how silly we look.  Especially when all the other sports teams walk by the windows and watch us float there kicking out tails off for minutes at a time!  Oh well, it's a good workout :)

The team has also been plaigued with the 24 hour stomach virus and head colds.  Lucky me got the stomach virus twice in the past week... No head cold though :)  But now I'm feeling much better!  Hopefully the rest of the the team gets better too once the medicines provided by health services kicks in!!

Me and RIC :)

jandreau_kayla08.jpgHey all!

Just a bit about me, my name is Kayla Jandreau and I am a sophomore at Rhode Island College.  I'm a catcher and last year I started about half of the games we played.  The other half of the time I was the DP.

Just some bits about RIC, we have been regular season champs in '05, '06, '07, and '08.  We were the conference tournament champs in '06, '07, and '08.  We've made it to the NCAA regionals in '06, '07 and '08.  And we have been to the NCAA Nationals in '07 and '08.  This year we have been ranked 18 preseason.  It's the first time we have been ranked preseason and the team and I are really excited about it :)

SoftballLECChamps08.jpg

We are looking to have another great season this year.  This year our goal is to go undefeated from our spring training in FL all the way back to Nationals again.  It's going to be quite the year! :)
