BOSTON COLLEGE, IONA CLAIM NCAA NORTHEAST REGION TITLES
Boston College won the womenÂ¹s race and Iona won the menÂ¹s race at the NCAA Northeast Region Championship hosted by Northeastern University on Saturday at Franklin Park in Boston. Boston College and Columbia got the womenÂ¹s automatic berths to the NCAA Championship while Iona and Dartmouth qualified for the NCAA Championship on the menÂ¹s side.
Providence CollegeÂ¹s Fiona Crombie won the womenÂ¹s race in a time of 20:27.7 for the 6,000-meter course, but the Friars placed third overall. The top five finishers in the womenÂ¹s race all finished within 10 seconds. Boston College was an unlikely winner in the team event, as the EaglesÂ¹ top finisher was Maria Cicero in ninth in a time of 21:00.5. BC scored 87 points to edge Columbia (88) and Providence (94). Boston University claimed fourth with 160 points.
The menÂ¹s race was a duel from the start between IonaÂ¹s Kiplagat and Providence CollegeÂ¹s Martin Fagan. Kiplagat got the edge down the final stretch and won the race in 29:11.2 just before FaganÂ¹s 29:15.6. DartmouthÂ¹s Ben True finished third in 30:03.8. Iona scored 33 points to claim the team championship ahead of Dartmouth (50), Providence (67) and Cornell (104).
