Division I Rowing - Day 1 RecapMay 26, 2007

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - Brown and Virginia started the 2007 NCAA Rowing Championships with some very strong finishes on the first day of the 2007 NCAA Rowing Championships, held on Melton Hill Lake. The two teams won the heats in the Second Eights and Fours to advance straight to Sunday's finals.

The two teams were pitted against each other in the first race of the day, the First Eights opening heat. Brown (6:30.54) edged out Virginia (6:30.64) in the closest race of the day, taking a 10th of a second win in the heat. Harvard (6:36.08) came in third to move into Saturday's semifinals. The second heat saw Yale (6:33.40) finish with a half-length win over Notre Dame (6:35.67). Dartmouth snuck by Stanford at the line to take the third spot in the race and a slot in Saturday's semifinals. The Big Green (6:35.90) beat the Cardinal (6:36.12) to the line by 0.22 seconds. In the third heat, Southern California (6:39.00) closed with a seat victory over Minnesota (6:39.56). Ohio State (6:40.18) got to the end of the course two seats ahead of California (6:41.06) to take the final automatic spot in the semifinals, set for an 8 a.m. start on Saturday morning.

In the First Eights repechage, which determines the final three participants in the semifinals, Stanford (6:35.98) beat Tennessee (6:36.91) to the line by two seats, while the Lady Vols held a one-seat advantage over Princeton (6:37.41), putting the Tigers in third place. Those three crews still have the opportunity to qualify for the grand finals. Washington came in fourth, while UCLA finished fifth in front of California and UCF. Those final four boats will race in the "C" final on Sunday at 11:15 a.m. EDT.

The Cavaliers were dominant in their two heat wins, taking a two-length victory over the USC Trojans in the Fours and an open-water advantage over the California Bears in the Second Eights. Brown did not finish with quite the advantage, but they did get the job done with a seven-seat triumph in the 2V8+ over Minnesota and a near-length victory in the V4+ over Yale.

Division I events start at 8 a.m. with the First Eights Semifinals and conclude at 9:15 with the last of the Second Eights repechage. Admission for adults for Saturday and Sunday cost $15 per adult per day with $5 for children and adults.
