WHITTIER, Calif. - The Whittier College baseball team could never get on track against No. 10 Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday afternoon. The Sagehens totaled 32 runs and 40 hits in the twin bill as they completed the series sweep of the Poets, 14-3 and 18-1, at Memorial Field.
Pomona-Pitzer (6-2, 6-0 SCIAC) got to the starting pitching for Whittier early in both games. In the first game of the day starter Ryan Schwenn went 2.1 innings and allowed eight runs (five earned) on seven hits. Three of the runs came in Pomona's first at bat.
In the second game Kevin Pigott surrendered 12 runs (10 earned) in two inning of work. The Sagehens plated five in the top of the first.
The Poets faced a 9-0 deficit before they scored their first run of Game 1 in the home half of the third. Chris Hylland drove in Jacob Storrer with an RBI triple to put WC on the board. The Poets cut the lead to 9-2 at the end of the fourth with a run by Reed Tuttle who led off the fourth with a single up the middle.
Tuttle finished 2-for-4 in the first game and added a hit and an RBI in the second contest.
The Sagehens continued to hit the Whittier pitching well all afternoon as they tacked on a run in the fifth and a pair of scores in the sixth.
Casey Serna relieved Schween in the third inning but allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits in 2.2 innings and Albert Payano scattered seven hits in 2.2 innings (two runs).
Hylland had two hits in Game 1.
WC managed only one run in the second as Hylland and Tuttle hit back-to-back doubles in the third to prevent the shutout.
The Poets used five arms in the second game and allowed 16 earned runs.
Whittier returns to the diamond next Friday afternoon as they take on La Verne in a single game at Memorial Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 pm.
