Mazzoni's Gem Leads N.C. State To Upset Over No. 6 Georgia Tech

RALEIGH, N.C. - Cory Mazonni threw 4 1/3 no-hit innings, striking out five en route to a 4-2 win over sixth-ranked Georgia Tech on Saturday afternoon at Doak Field at Dail Park.NC State wins the series by virtue of winning the first two games.
All nine starting position players for the Wolfpack reached base, with Drew Poulk going 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. The Wolfpack defense turned three double plays, tying their season high.
NC State improved to 28-17 and 11-12 in the ACC with the win. The Yellow Jackets fell to 35-9 and 16-7. Mazzoni (6-2) pitched seven innings and allowed two runs on four hits. He walked five and struck out five. Brandon Compton (6-2) took the loss after allowing four runs on six hits in 5 1/3 innings. Anthony Tzamtzis faced six batters and retired five of them, three on strikes, and rolled a double play to record his first save.
The Wolfpack took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Andrew Ciencin reached on a fielder's choice to the shortstop, following a Dallas Poulk walk. Drew Poulk singled to right to advance Ciencin to second. With two outs, Chris Schaeffer walked, loading the bases. Cumpton walked Pratt Maynard to drive in Ciencin. Harold Riggins was hit by a pitch to drive in Poulk.
NC State extended its lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the second. Matt Berqguist led off with a walk. Dallas Poulk reached first on catcher's interference putting runners on first and second. Ciencin singled down the third base line to load the bases with one out. Berqguist and Dallas Poulk scored on a fielder's choice by Drew Poulk and a throwing error on the Tech shortstop Derek Dietrich.
The Yellow Jackets got on the board in the top of the fifth with a run and two hits. Thomas Nichols got it started with a one-out walk. Jason Esch then broke up Mazzoni's no-hitter with a single to right field. Brandon Thomas singled to center field scoring Nichols.
Georgia Tech closed the gap to 4-2 in the eighth. Mazzoni walked Rowland, and Dietrich reached on catcher's interference to put runners on first and second with none out. Tony Plagman then knocked Mazzoni from the game with a single to left that scored Rowland from second. Tzamtzis came into the game with no outs and runners on first and second and promptly moved Dietrich and Plagman to second and third with a wild pitch. Skole walked to load the bases with no outs, but Tzamtzis struck out Leonida, and Burnette grounded into a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.
