EMPORIA, Kan. -- No. 2 Emporia State picked up eight hits but left eight runners on base as it dropped the series opener to Nebraska-Omaha 8-2. The Mavericks had 15 hits on the night and UNO pitchers struck out 10 Hornets.

ESU jumped out to the early lead as Joe Vaskas homered to deep center field to give the Hornets the 2-0 lead in the first inning.

UNO answered with three runs in the second and got single runs in the fourth and fifth. The Mavs plated two more in the seventh and one in the ninth on the way to the six-run victory.

At the plate for ESU, Dillon Hazlett went 2 for 4 with with a run scored. Vaskas finished 1 for 3 on the day with a run scored and two RBIs.

On the mound Brandon Faulkner dropped to 5-1 on the season as he allowed seven runs across 6.2 innings pitched. David Holman had his best outing out of the bullpen going two innings and striking out four while not allowing an earned run.
