Oklahoma shuts down Nebraska
Smith fires 7 1/3 innings of two hit ball to lead Sooners to win
NORMAN, Okla. – Birch Smith and No. 11 Oklahoma defeated Nebraska by a score of 4-1 Saturday afternoon at L. Dale Mitchell Park to take game two of the series.
The victory marks the Sooners’ second Big 12 series win of the season. The first series win came against Texas Tech, in which the Sooners swept the Red Raiders.
This is the second consecutive season the OU won the first two games of the series against the Huskers. Last time the Sooners swept Nebraska was in 1997.
Smith led Oklahoma thru 7 1/3 innings, posting nine strikeouts, giving up only two hits and one run. Dillon Overton was able to take over for the remainder of the eighth.
Ryan Duke completed his fifth save of the season for Sooners, making it his 33rd career save. His 83 career appearances tie him for second place all-time at Oklahoma with Evan Gresel.
Casey Johnson had a strong outing on the day, going 3-for-4 at the plate with one run and one RBI.
Adding an insurance run was Caleb Bushyhead at the bottom of the eighth. His RBI groundout put the Sooners up 3-1.
Garrett Buechele also posted an RBI in the eighth to push the lead to 4-1. His RBI put Buechele in sole possession of 10th place at OU with 155 RBIs.
Nebraska’s three hits tied a season low for the Cornhuskers, which came against UCLA on March 4th.
