TOPEKA, Kan. — No. 4 Emporia State dropped a doubleheader on the road to Washburn in the first half of the Turnpike Tussle. The Hornets dropped the opener 10-7 before falling 4-2 in the nightcap.
In game one ESU jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but a five run second for the Ichabods put the game out of reach as they took a 10-7 victory. At the plate Joe Vaskas went two for three with his 11th home run of the season. Andy Cotton went one for four and drove in two runs. Parker Amos also added an RBI for ESU as three of the Horents runs were unearned. Beau Poston went two for three and scored two runs. Dillon Hazlett singled in the first to push his hitting streak to 30 games.
On the mound Brandon Faulkner dropped to 7-2 on the season as the Hornets used four pitchers.
In game two ESU scored first as Dillon Hazlett scored and drove in a run while going two for four and extending his hitting streak to 31 games. ESU stranded runners on second and third with one out in the top of the eighth inning in the 4-2 loss. Parker Amos went two for three and drove in a run.
On the mound Zach Gove allowed only one earned run in his first loss of the season.
The two teams will return to the field tomorrow for a doubleheader with a scheduled first pitch of 3 p.m. The Hornets will honor 13 seniors as part of the Senior Day festivities.
