Christopher Newport is in the midst of its best season in school history, setting a record for wins, and now the top-ranked Captains (39-5) will take aim at a national championship.
Connor Madden anchors a cast of talented hitters, batting .406 with 57 RBI. He has hit 23 doubles as well. Billy Steel has been strong at the plate, hitting .333 with 42 RBI.
The pitching staff of the Captains has been phenomenal as well. Sean Chitsaz is 9-2 with 60 strikeouts. His ERA is 3.08. Greg Goldsmith has gone 7-1 this season, striking out 49, and fashioning and ERA of 2.23.
Bryan Bierlein is 6-0 with a 2.26 ERA and has recorded 34 strikeouts. The Captains will be the top seed for the regional at USA Stadium in Millington, Tenn.
Wabash is in the tournament for the first time in school history after winning the North Coast Athletic Conference. The Little Giants (21-20) have been led by Chris Deig, who is hitting .396 with 38 runs scored. Andrew Swart is 7-4 with a 4.00 ERA. He has struck out 64 batters while Brian Van Duyn is 3-3 with a 5.05 ERA. He has 63 strikeouts for a Wabash team that has won its last six games.
• Piedmont is in the NCAA tournament for the second time in four years. The Lions (30-13) are led by Kyle Davis, who is batting .396 with 42 runs scored and 30 runs driven in.
Kevin Caldwell has been one of the top pitchers for the Lions, going 8-2 with 61 strikeouts.
• Salisbury is riding an eight-game win streak and is making its 12th consecutive trip to the NCAA tournament. The Sea Gulls (29-11) are paced by Bill Root and Brian Green. Root is batting .375 with 18 RBI and 36 runs. Green is batting .370 with 27 RBI. He has hit 10 doubles.
Chris Greiner is 9-2 with 87 strikeouts on the year while Dustin Herbert is 7-2 with 57 strikeouts. He has thrown four complete games.
• Webster is coming off its fifth consecutive St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tourney title and is led by Anthony Genna, who is batting .372 with 48 RBI and seven home runs. Zach Schneider is 6-4 with a 1.98 ERA and 77 strikeouts for the Gorlocks (31-11).
Shenandoah is the second seed and is 34-5 on the year. The Hornets are led by Kevin Brashears, who is .405 with 40 RBI. Greg Van Sickler is batting .400 with seven home runs and 38 RBI. Vansickler is also a threat on the mound. He is 10-1 with 73 strikeouts and a 2.02 ERA.
