West Florida tops Barry in NCAA play
Vargas-Vila tosses complete game to lead Argos to victory
PENSACOLA, Fla. – West Florida defeated Barry Friday in the second round at the NCAA South Regional 9-2. Daniel Vargas-Vila made UWF history by earning his 13th victory of the season surpassing the single season wins record of 12 by Brett McCollough set in 2007. The Argonauts improved to 46-8 overall while Barry fell to 36-16 overall.
Vargas-Vila hurled a complete game allowing just two runs on six hits while fanning six batters, guiding the Argos to victory. Brett Hammaker had the ball for Barry receiving the loss allowing six runs on eight hits in five innings of work.
The Argonauts struck first in the top of the second inning plating two runs on RBI hits by Leo Lamarche and Tyler Hastings. West Florida tacked on another two runs in the top of the third inning on a two run blast by Greg Pron, giving the Argos a 4-0 lead.
UWF scored another run in the top of the fourth inning when Korey Domenick came into score on a RBI single through the left side of the infield by Taye Larry. The Argonauts crossed another run in the top of the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Josh Huggins scoring Dustin Lawley, giving UWF a commanding 6-0 lead.
Barry scored their only runs of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two run homerun by Dean Green, cutting into UWF’s lead 6-2. The Argonauts tacked on three insurance runs in the top of the eighth inning on RBI base hits by Hastings and Larry, securing UWF’s victory 9-2.
