LA JOLLA, Calif.  - The No. 4 ranked UC San Diego baseball team won its 2009 opener with a 9-6 victory over San Diego Christian College on Sunday afternoon.  Tim Mort, Evan Kehoe and Garrett Imeson had multiple RBI days and UCSD's bullpen pitched four innings without allowing an earned run.  With the win, UCSD is 1-0 and San Diego Christian College drops to 3-2.  Matt Rossman earned the win in relief and Guido Knudson picked-up the save. 

With the Tritons trailing 5-3 in the fifth, Kehoe had the game tying single and Vance Albitz had the go-ahead RBI sac-fly in the sixth.

Kehoe finished the day going 3-for-4 with two RBI, Mort went 2-for-4 with three RBI and Imeson went 1-for-3 with two RBI, including a solo homerun.

Kirby St. John started for UCSD and went five innings allowing four earned runs and got a no-decision.

The loss went to SDCC's Sergio Panela.  The Hawks offense was led by Ryan Inverso with three hits and Chris Brard with two hits, three RBI and a homerun.

In the second, Cantele walked and Evan Kehoe doubled off the right field wall to put runners on second and third with no outs.  Tim Mort singled through the left side to put UCSD up 2-0.  The Tritons would go on to load the bases with still no outs.  Robert Sedin hit a sac fly to give the Tritons a 3-0 edge.

SDCC got on the board in the fourth inning on a two-out RBI single by Manny Hernandez and the Hawks trailed 3-1. 

SDCC put the first two runners on in the fifth on an error and hit batsman.  Ryan Inverso singled for an RBI and pulled SDCC within 3-2.  Chris Brard followed with a three-run homerun to right and put the Hawks ahead 5-3.

Garrett Imeson led off the UCSD fifth with a home run to left center and UCSD trailed 5-4.  With two outs, Mort doubled to right center, driving in Kehoe to tie the game at 5-5.

With one out in the sixth, Nick Burke singled.  Robert Sedin was hit by a pitch and Imeson walked to load the bases.  Vance Albitz hit a sac fly RBI to center and the Tritons went ahead 6-5.  With two outs and the bases loaded, Kehoe singled through the left side for two RBI and the Tritons led 8-5.

SDCC scored an unearned run in the eighth to pull within 8-6.

Guido Knudson pitched a perfect ninth for the save, striking out two.

UCSD is back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Point Loma Nazarene.  First pitch is slated for 2:00 p..m. at Triton Baseball Field.
