CARY, N.C. - The No. 1 ranked UC San Diego baseball team had 14 hits in an 8-6 win over No. 2 West Chester on Tuesday night at the USA Baseball Training Complex in Cary, N.C. In the elimination game, the Tritons jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the ninth inning as Matt Rossman (8-2) nearly had a complete game before WCU rallied with five runs in its final at-bat. "Today I cannot say enough about Matt's performance," said head coach Dan O'Brien. "He shut down a potent offense in an elimination game." With the win, UCSD improves to 40-14, while the Golden Rams' season comes to a close at 46-12.

A game after being limited to only three hits, the Tritons got multiple hits from six student-athletes. Brandon Gregorich had a team-high three hits while Vance Albitz, Josh Tanner, Garrett Imeson, Robert Sedin and Tim Mort had two hits apiece. Imeson's RBI single in the first was his 300th of his career.

In the UCSD first, Vance Albitz was hit by a pitch to lead off the game and advanced to second on a balk. With one out, Garrett Imeson sent career hit No. 300 to left field for an RBI and UCSD went up 1-0. Brandon Gregorich would follow with a double but the next two Tritons were retired to end the inning.

With two outs in the UCSD third, Evan Kehoe doubled off the base of the left field wall for an RBI and UCSD went ahead 2-0. Robert Sedin followed with a hard ground ball up the middle that got away from the shortstop and two more Tritons would run around the bases to score unearned runs and UCSD went up 4-0.

In the top of the West Chester fourth, Kevin McGrath homered to left field for WCU's first run of the game.

With two outs in the UCSD sixth, Albitz singled and Josh Tanner bunted for a single down the third base line. Imeson followed with a single through the right side, his second RBI of the game and UCSD went ahead 5-1.

With one out in the UCSD seventh, Robert Sedin homered off the left field foul pole and UCSD led 6-1.

The Tritons got an insurance run in the eighth as Tim Mort singled and advanced to second on a sac bunt. Mort would steal third with one out and scored on Josh Tanner's RBI single to center and for the 7-1 score. With two outs, Gregorich singled to right field to plate Tanner and UCSD led 8-1.

Rossman nearly got a complete game but gave up a bases loaded single and WCU was within 8-2 and the bases remained loaded. Ryland MacFadyen entered to get the final out but Matt Baer hit a grand slam to pull WCU within 8-6. MacFadyen got the final out on a ground ball to third as UCSD had its NCAA D-II Championships win.

UCSD is back in action on Wednesday against tonight's loser between Lynn and Dowling. Wednesday's game will be slated for a 3:00 p.m. (EDT) first pitch in Cary, N.C.
