AUSTIN, Texas - The Texas Longhorns completed a three-game sweep of the Stanford Cardinal with an 8-2 win at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Sunday.
Kevin Lusson, Kyle Lusson and Russell Moldenhauer drove in two runs apiece and Cole Green worked a perfect 5.0 innings out of the bullpen to earn his second victory of the week.
The Longhorns pounced on the Cardinal with three runs in the bottom of the first. With one out, Brandon Loy singled through the left side of the infield and moved to second on a failed pickoff attempt. Cameron Rupp smacked a single past the Stanford third baseman to break the scoring seal. Two pitches later, Moldenhauer crushed a two-run home run over the leftfield wall to give Texas a 3-0 edge.
Stanford (4-3) responded with runs in each of the next two innings to cut the lead to one run. In the second, Ben Clowe walked, stole second and scored on a triple by Tyler Gaffney. In the third, Dave Giuliani hit a leadoff single up the middle to start the frame, advanced to second a groundout by Zach Jones and scored when Colin Walsh laced a single to rightfield to trim the lead to 3-2.
The Cardinal's momentum was short lived as the Longhorns put three more runs on the board in the fourth. Connor Rowe singled to center and advanced to second on a Kevin Lusson walk. Kyle Lusson sent a shot down the right field line for a triple, scoring Rowe and Kevin Lusson. Jordan Etier walked to put runners at the corners. The final run of the inning was scored when Stanford starter Brett Mooneyham balked to first advancing Etier and scoring Kyle Lusson for the 6-2 advantage.
Texas added two insurance runs in the eighth. Moldenhauer walked to start off the inning and was replaced for pinch runner Tim Maitland. Rowe ripped a single through the left side and both runners scored when. Kevin Lusson drove one off the left centerfield wall for a double.
In addition to the brothers Lusson and Moldenhauer each having two RBI, Rowe helped spark the offense going 2-for-4 with two runs.
Austin Dicharry started for the Horns, yielding two runs on five hits and one walk over 4.0 innings. Green (2-0) entered the game in the top of the fifth and retired all 15 batters he faced to earn the victory.
Mooneyham (0-1) was tagged with the loss. He pitched 5.0 innings, allowing six runs on six hits and three walks while striking out seven.
Texas returns to UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Tuesday when they face UT-Pan American in a 6:05 p.m. contest.
