No. 11 St. Mary’s tops ACU
Panthers can’t slow down Rattlers, fail to cash in on miscues
SAN ANTONIO – No. 30 Abeline Christian outhit No. 11 St. Mary's (Texas) on Tuesday afternoon but was unable to take advantage of three Rattlers' errors as it fell 12-5 in non-conference baseball action at V.J. Keefe Memorial Stadium.
The Wildcats fell to 6-5 on the season while St. Mary's, which moved into the national top 20 this week, improved to 13-3.
The Rattlers jumped out early, taking a 5-0 lead as they scored four runs in the bottom of the first and a single run in the second. ACU responded with four runs in the top half of the third inning, but St. Mary's extended its lead again when Greg Herbst doubled, starting a three-run third-inning rally.
Will Calhoun took the loss as he only lasted two innings and gave up the first five runs. The Wildcats six pitchers to the mound with Brent Bray following Calhoun, but only lasting an inning while giving up the three runs in the bottom of the third.
Brady Rodriguez and Kevin Justice both pitched a scoreless appearance, combining to finish the fourth through seventh innings. Kris Carlson entered the eighth, but was unable to record an out allowing a hit and two walks and was responsible for the final four Rattler runs.
Duncan Blades had three RBI for the Wildcats, going 2 for 3 while Aaron Oliver and JR Roland also recorded multiple hits.
Calhoun did help his cause from the plate, going 3 for 5 with a walk and a run scored.
