Roadrunners use clutch hitting to down Gamecocks
COLUMBIA, S.C- No. 30 Cal State Bakersfield (12-5) defeated No. 4 South Carolina (11-2) 8-3 Sunday at Carolina Stadium.
For the third consecutive day, the Roadrunners got on the board first when Andrew Letourneau drove in Kevin Younger with a single in the top of the second.
Adam Matthews' single plated Christian Walker to tie the score in the bottom of the inning. DC Legg returned the lead to the Roadrunners in the top of the third when his sacrifice fly scored Jeremy Rodriguez. A Gamecocks' passed ball allowed Martin Medina to score and give CSUB a two-run advantage.
Tyler Shryock's two-RBI single made it 5-1. CSUB scored two more in the sixth as Medina posted an RBI double while Ryan McIntyre had an RBI single.
Tommy Hoenshell limited the Gamecocks to five hits through the first seven innings, but South Carolina threatened in the eighth. Jake Williams opened the eighth with a triple to left center. Jackie Bradley, Jr.'s sacrifice fly scored Williams. Walker came up next and doubled.
Adrian Morales singled in Walker to make it 7-3. Hoenshell silenced the rally when he got Brady Thomas to line out to Cael Brockmeyer, the Roadrunners' first baseman, who then stepped on first to double up Morales to end the inning.
A Younger two-out single in the top of the ninth drove in McIntyre to put the Roadrunners back up by five to produce the final score.
Letourneau, Medina, and McIntyre each posted two hits. Five of the eight CSUB runs came with two outs. The Roadrunners ended South Carolina's 14-game home winning streak that dated back to the 2010 season.
