Armstrong, UNC Pembroke each win
SAVANNAH, Ga. - Armstrong Atlantic State junior right-hander Chris Base hurled eight solid innings to give the No. 8 Armsrong Pirates a 6-1 Peach Belt Conference baseball victory against visiting No. 12 UNC Pembroke in game one of a Sunday doubleheader at Pirate Field. UNC Pembroke earned a split in the doubleheader with a 10-1 win in game two.
The split sets up a rubber game on Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. between the Pirates (25-7, 9-2 PBC) and the Braves (27-7, 9-7 PBC) for the important league series.
Base (5-1) limited the Braves to seven hits and one unearned run, walking two and striking out five in the game-one win. After UNC Pembroke pushed across an unearned run in the top of the second, Chris Zittrouer's two-out two-RBI double in the bottom of the second inning put Armstrong on top, 2-1.
The Pirates would add single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, then put the game out of reach in the seventh on RBI singles by John Roberts and Clayton Miller.
Josh Bagley (3-2) took the loss for the Braves, giving up five hits and four runs in 5.1 innings pitched, walking five and striking out two.
UNC Pembroke took advantage of early wildness from Armstrong starter Chandler Hall in the first inning of the second game. After an RBI single by Josh Haley put the Braves up, 1-0, Hall hit J.J. Williams with the bases loaded for a run, then walked Alex Pearce with the bases full for another run en route to the four-run frame.
The Braves then knocked Hall out of the game with three runs in the fourth inning after a Mickens RBI single and an error allowed two more runs to score.
Armstrong got a run back in the bottom of the fourth on a Josh Heath RBI groundout, but the Braves scored single runs in the fifth, seventh and eighth innings to claim the 10-1 win.
