Emporia St. takes three versus MSSU
Hornets move to 27-4, 23-3 in the MIAA
April 9, 2011 -- The No. 5 Emporia State baseball team took three games as they concluded a nine-inning contest from Friday and then swept a double header against MSSU. ESU took the conclusion of Friday's game 7-5, took game one of Saturday's scheduled doubleheader 12-2, before taking the nightcap 11-8.
In the conclusion of Friday's game, ESU grabbed three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to put the game out of reach a 7-5 win. Kevin Wempe and Beau Poston hit solo home runs as Poston finished three for four with three RBI. David Allbritton scored two runs and drove in two as he went two for four in the game. Andy Cotton and Parker Amos also added RBI for ESU.
On the mound Jake Hosey earned his fifth win of the season striking out four while scattering three runs. Brett Kinsel earned his first career save as he came on with ESU leading 4-3 on Friday night, and pitched the only inning on Saturday.
In game one of today's scheduled double header ESU got six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and rolled to a 12-2 victory. The game saw six ESU home runs, four of which were solo shots. Dillon Hazlett homered and went three for four in the game driving in one run and scoring two. David Allbritton homered, his second of the season and had three hits as he drove in five Hornet runs. Kevin Wempe added his third home run of the season and drove in two runs. Parker Amos hit a home run and scored three runs. Travis Whipple went one for four and added a solo home run.
On the mound Zach Gove pitched 6.1 inning in his first career start striking out three and only allowing one earned run as he moved to 4-0 on the season.
In game two of the double header ESU got eight runs in the first three innings and held off a MSSU comeback in an 11-8 victory. The game saw five home runs in total as ESU hit three and MSSU finished with two. Travis Whipple got his fifth home run of the season going two for three and driving in two runs. Joe Vaskas hit his tenth home run of the season while driving in three runs and finishing three for five in the game. Kevin Wempe hit his fifth home run and third of the weekend as he added two RBI. Rudy Weiser, Dillon Hazlett and Vaskas all scored two runs in the game. J.D. Herman and David Allbritton also had RBI in the game.
On the mound Spencer Blades allowed only one run over five innings to pick up his first win of the season. After the ESU bullpen allowed seven runs over the next 0.2 innings Brett Kisnel came in and allowed only one base runner over 2.1 innings to set up the game for Michael Cotter who earned his tenth save by pitching in the ninth.
