Letourneau runs CSUB past Irvine
Shannon earns first win with two innings of scoreless relief
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Andrew Letourneau’s RBI single in the bottom of the 10th capped off a CSUB comeback as the Roadrunners (24-13) defeated No. 17 UC Irvine (26-12), 5-4, in 10 innings.
The Anteaters seemed to have the game in hand, heading into the ninth with a 4-0 lead.
Then, it all went wrong.
Tyler Shryock opened the top of the ninth with a single to center, and Ryan McIntyre walked to chase UCI starter Matt Summers. The Anteaters’ closer Brian Hernandez came in from his starting third base position in relief.
Letourneau singled up the middle to plate Shryock followed by Jeremy Rodriguez's single to left center, scoring McIntyre. Hernandez was lifted for Jimmy Litchfield. CSUB cleanup hitter Martin Medina, the first batter Litchfield faced, grounded into a fielder’s choice to shortstop, but Letourneau scored to make it 4-3.
Second baseman Oscar Sanay came up with one out and singled to right center to bring up DC Legg, who lined out to right for the second out. Mick Gaston then singled down the right field line to score Medina and tie the game and send it to extras.
Shryock led off the bottom of the 10th with a single and took second on the sacrifice bunt. Letourneau drove a 2-1 pitch to left field off reliever Nick Hoover--Irvine's fourth pitcher of the game--to score Shryock for the game-winning run.
Summers was stellar on the mound, throwing eight innings and allowing two runs on three hits. He retired the first 10 CSUB batters he faced before Letourneau singled to center with one out in the bottom of the fourth. He faced just two over the minimum through eight, giving up a single to Medina in the seventh.
Drew Hillman’s RBI single in the top of the first gave the Anteaters the early lead. Sean Madigan got aboard in the Anteater first on a groundball up the middle that was mishandled by Sanay. A failed pickoff by starter Mike McCarthy allowed Madigan to advance to second and a grounder to third put Madigan on third with two outs for Drew Hillman, who dropped a single to right-field to give UCI a 1-0 lead.
UC Irvine used timely hitting with two outs to score two runs in the top of the seventh. The Anteaters posted five of their 10 hits in the game during the stanza. Tommy Reyes and D.J. Crumlich extended UCI's lead to 3-0 in the seventh on back-to-back two-out singles to score Christian Ramirez and Ronnie Shaeffer. Jordan Leyland tacked on a run for the Anteaters in the eighth on a sacrifice fly to score Hernandez, who was hit by the pitch, advanced to second on a bunt single by Hillman before taking third on a ground-ball out.
Nick Shannon earned his first victory with two innings of scoreless relief of McCarthy. Letourneau ended the night 3-for-5 with two RBIs; Shryock was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and McCarthy struck out five and did not walk a batter in eight innings of work.
Hillman went 3-for-4 to pace UCI. Jordan Fox, making his first start since Apr. 5, was 2-for-4. Reyes also had two hits while driving in a run.
