Chapman ousts Wis.-Whitewater
Youth movement continues for Panthers in title tournament
Troy Newman is only a freshman, but he didn’t play like a rookie for Chapman (35-12) in an elimination game against Whitewater on Sunday afternoon at Fox Cities Stadium.
Newman drove in three runs, including one in the eighth that helped secure a 4-3 victory against the Warhawks (37-13). His hit came in a pressure situation as there were two outs in the inning when he delivered the clutch hit..
Jeff Donovan tried to make things interesting against the Panthers. The Whitewater star hit a two-run home run in the seventh that cut the deficit to 3-2.
But Christian Maietta (6-2) would not let his team go down. He gave up only two runs on five hits and struck out one in the complete-game effort. Charlie Piro and Tyler Surnbrock came up with two hits apiece for the Panthers
Riley Tincher suffered the loss for the Warhawks. Tincher (10-4) gave up three runs on six hits and struck out two.
Donovan and Andrew Eichstaedt tallied two hits apiece for the War Hawks, who had won the three previous meetings against the ninth-ranked Panthers, all in Appleton at the national tournament.
