West Florida into first title game
Argonauts comeback with three runs in the seventh inning
CARY, N.C. – After falling behind 3-1, West Florida rallied back to defeat Mount Olive 5-3, punching its ticket to the program's first Division II national championship game (Saturday, 12 p.m. ET). With the victory, West Florida improved to 51-9 and eliminated the Trojans (47-10).
West Florida took the lead in the seventh inning, plating three runs to take a 4-3 lead. Korey Domenick drove in the first run on an RBI single through the right side of the infield to bring in Leo Lamarche. Greg Pron came up and ripped a two-RBI single with two away to bring in Domenick and Taye Larry.
The Argos tacked on an insurance run in the eighth inning with a two-out RBI single by Tyler Hastings off Carter Capps to score Eric Kroll, who pinch ran for Zach Taylor after a double to right field.
Zach Jadofsky (4-0) came in relief and threw 3.2 shutout innings, surrendering just one hit while fanning two batters to pick up the win. Zach North (1-1) sealed the Argos' win with 1.2 innings of no-hit, shutout ball to earn the save. North struck out two. Ben Hawkins started for West Florida but was relieved after 3.2 innings; he allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits while striking out three.
Mount Olive got their offense going to take an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on a sacrifice fly to center field by Micheal Knox. West Florida answered with a run of their own in the second on Josh Huggins' RBI single to center field. Daniel Coffey gave the Trojans the lead back with a two-run scoring double to the left field corner in the bottom of the fifth.
Pete Levitt started on the mound for Mount Olive and tossed 6.1 innings allowing four runs on five hits while striking out seven batters. David Combs followed and was touched up for one run on two hits in 1.1 innings of work. Capps, the Division II National Pitcher of the Year, came on in the eighth and gave up one hit in 1.1 innings.
