Maine starter throws eight innings of two-hit ball to stay alive
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Jeffrey Gibbs threw eight innings of two-hit ball and Maine claimed its first NCAA tournament victory in six years, a 4-1 victory against Florida International in an elimination game Saturday.
Gibbs struck out eight and allowed one run, and Ian Leisenheimer had two hits and an RBI for the Black Bears (33-23).
Pablo Bermudez led off the game with a single, but the Panthers (40-20-1) didn’t get another hit until Yoandy Barrosso led off the ninth with a double. He scored on a single by Bermudez two batters later—the first run allowed by Maine in 17 innings.
Gibbs (8-5), who beat regional host North Carolina here during the 2010 regular season, led the Black Bears to their first regional win since they beat Southern Mississippi in
