Plutko dominates as UCLA beats USF
Freshman allows one hit in 7 2-3 innings to beat Dons in L.A.
LOS ANGELES -- Adam Plutko limited San Francisco to one hit over 7 2-3 innings and UCLA beat the Dons 4-1 on Sunday to advance to the championship of the NCAA Los Angeles Regional.
The top-seeded Bruins (35-23) face UC Irvine (41-16) on Sunday night, needing to beat the Anteaters to set up a winner-take-all game for the regional title Monday night.
Plutko (7-4) retired 12 of the first 13 batters, and didn’t allow a hit until the fifth inning. The freshman struck out six.
Dean Espy, Cody Regis and Pat Valaika each had two hits and an RBI for UCLA.
San Francisco starter Jonathan Abramson (2-3) allowed three runs—two earned—in 2 1-3 innings.
The Dons (33-25), who beat UCLA 3-0 on Friday night, scored their lone run in the bottom of the ninth inning off reliever Nick Vander Tuig.
