West Florida finishes sweep of Rollins
Stephens fans nine in six innings to earn first win as Argonaut
PENSACOLA, Fla. -- No. 4 West Florida knocked off Rollins 4-1 on Sunday afternoon to complete the series sweep. Jake Stephens earned his first win as an Argonaut allowing one run on five hits while fanning nine in six innings of work. With the win the Argos improve to 5-1 overall, and 3-0 at Jim Spooner Field, and increase their winning streak to five games.
The Argos struck first in the bottom of the first inning on a RBI single to right field by Dustin Saulmon scoring Taye Larry, putting West Florida on top 1-0. The Tars answered back in the top of the third inning on a RBI single to center field by Zach Persky scoring Nick Adams, tying the score at one.
The Argos regained the lead at 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly to right field by Leo Lamarche to score Josh Huggins. West Florida added two more runs to their lead, bringing it to 4-1, in the sixth inning scoring on a bases loaded walk followed by a RBI single up the middle by Cayleb Coker.
UWF was led offensively by Sauls and Huggins. Sauls was 2-4 with a run batted in while Huggins was 2-4 with two runs scored.
UWF’s lead held strong as Brian Ellington and Bobby Parker had shutout performances out of the bullpen. Ellington tossed two innings and allowed two hits while striking out two. Parker earned this third save in as many games hurling a perfect ninth inning. The Tar’s Mike Howard received the loss allowing four runs on five hits in 5.2 innings of work.
