West Florida outlasts Columbus State
Argos take advantage of Cougars’ shoddy defense to earn win
PENSACOLA, Fla. -- No. 1 West Florida defeated No. 10 Columbus State 3-2 on Tuesday at Jim Spooner Field. With the win the Argonauts improve to 14-3 overall, 1-1 in the Gulf South Conference and 8-1 at home.
Columbus State struck first in the top of the second inning scoring on a wild pitch. The Argos answered back with a three-run second inning taking advantage of three CSU errors and a RBI groundout by Justin Bennett.
The Cougars broke the scoring drought plating a run in the top of the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly to right field Logan Dollar, cutting UWF's lead to 3-2. UWF‘s Bobby Parker came in to secure the victory hurling a scoreless ninth inning to record his seventh save of the season.
The Argos offense was led by Bennett, Taye Larry and JR Pryor. Bennett, in his first start this season, was 2-3 with an RBI, Larry was 2-4 and Pryor was 2-5 with a run scored.
Brian Ellington picked up his fourth win of the season getting the starting nod for the Argos. Ellington tossed 6.1 innings allowing two runs on four hits while striking out seven. Drew Bryson followed out of the pen throwing 1.2 scoreless innings. Columbus State’s Drew Dades picked up the loss allowing three runs on eight hits in five innings of work.
