UNION, N.J. -- Kevin Herget picked up his third win of the season after scattering six singles across eight innings as third-ranked Kean picked up a 5-0 victory against No. 9 Eastern Connecticut State on Saturday.

Herget (3-0), who has not allowed a run this season, fanned nine and allowed one walk as Kean improved to 8-2.  The loss is the first for the Warriors who fall to 4-1.

The Cougars opened the scoring in the first inning as Steve Sanguiliano reached on a two-out walk.  He would later move to third after a single from Joe O'Connor and score on a wild pitch. Dylan Laguna made it 2-0 with an RBI double.

Kean would add to its lead with a run in the third as O'Connor lofted a sacrifice fly, scoring Vinny Galya, who reached on a leadoff single.

Kean closed out scoring with two runs in the seventh as Shane Alvarez hit his first collegiate home run, a two-run shot, for the final of 5-0.

Herget got out of trouble in the eighth as the Warriors loaded the bases with one out. He struck out the next two batters to keep the shutout intact. Sanguiliano closed the game with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

Offensively Laguna had the only multihit game; he was 2-for-4 with a double.

Starter Andrew Merritt suffered his first loss for Eastern Connecticut.  He allowed three runs and six hits in three innings.
