No. 3 USC Aiken slips by Newberry
Pacers score three runs in bottom of eighth to finish comeback
AIKEN, S.C. -- Third-ranked USC Aiken baseball team plated three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to pull away from visiting Newberry and pick up a 5-3 victory on Wednesday evening at Roberto Hernandez Stadium.
Newberry (15-24) scored the first three runs of the contest in the opening three stanzas, but USC Aiken (26-9) scored five unanswered runs to take the victory.
Down 3-2 entering the bottom of the eighth, Josh Miller opened things in the frame by laying down a bunt single. A couple batters later with one out, Tyler Bourdo singled to right field to place runners at first and third for the Pacers. Stephen Bellantoni was then brought in to pinch run for Bourdo.
Will Tankersley promptly singled to right field to bring in Miller to even the game at 3-3. Bellantoni advanced to third on the play. Pacer designated hitter Bill Gerstenslagler then hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Bellantoni and give USC Aiken its first lead of the contest at 4-3.
Ty Barkell singled in Tankersley shortly thereafter to secure the fifth and final run of the game for USC Aiken.
One of six Pacer pitchers utilized in the game, Wyatt Brown pitched a scoreless eighth to acquire the win for USC Aiken. Brown is now 6-0 on the year. Taylor Grover claimed the last out of the contest with a strikeout to secure his third save of the season for the Pacers.
Wesley Camp dealt the first 7.2 innings of the game for Newberry, allowing all five Pacer runs. He is now 1-4 on the season.
USC Aiken out-hit Newberry 12-5 in the contest. Five different Pacers recorded multiple hits with Miller, Nick Aranas, Tankersley, Barkell and Bryce Baur all ending their efforts with two hits.
