Messiah defends conference crown
Tajiri knocks in game-winning run to lead Falcons to title
WEST LAWN, Pa. -- Messiah defeated Alvernia 2-1 on Saturday, winning three consecutive games as the No. 4-seed in the Commonwealth Championship to successfully defend its conference title from 2011.
The Falcons twice defeated No. 1 Alvernia, winning on Thursday and then Saturday in the championship.
In Saturday's win, senior Sam Tajiri -- named the Commonwealth Championship Most Outstanding Player -- collected the game-winning hit with an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning. Wes Hollenbach gutted out a 131 pitch effort to go 7.2 innings and allow nine hits and only one walk, striking out four batters.
The Falcons, once 2-7 in the conference standings this season, complete an impressive run by taking 10 of their last 12 Commonwealth games (including playoffs).
