Felician advances in CACC tourney
Trio of Golden Falcons' pitchers hold Bloomfield to just one hit
NEW CASTLE, Del. -- Brian Dudzinski allowed one hit over seven innings and Jimmy Simpson went 3-for-3 as No. 1 seed Felician advanced in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference tournament with a 5-1 victory against No. 4 seed Bloomfield on Thursday afternoon at Wilson Field.
With its victory in the opening game of the double-elimination portion of the tournament, Felician (26-22) moves on to the winners' bracket final.
Bloomfield scored a run without a hit in the top of the first inning. Dudzinski hit the first batter of the game, Bloomfield's Jonattan Fernandez, and then committed a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt attempt, moving Fernandez to third base. Two batters later, Rafael Medina came up with a sacrifice fly.
Felician tied the game in the bottom of the first on Simpson's RBI double, and the game remained 1-1 until the fourth, when the Golden Falcons loaded the bases with none out. Gary Lavoie put Felician ahead with a sacrifice fly, but Bloomfield starter Luis Mendoza escaped further damage.
Dudzinski (5-5) held the Deacons at bay, allowing his only hit to Mike Monaco with one out in the second. He also worked around four hit batsmen and three walks. His offense gave him a cushion with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
George Hajjar who had singled and stole second, scored on a wild pitch. Felician then put runners on second and third, and after pinch-hitter Chris Ayala produced a sacrifice fly, Lavoie came home on an error to cap the scoring.
Jack Fowler and Chet Godfrey tossed an inning apiece for the Golden Falcons to complete the one-hitter. Mendoza (4-4) went the distance for Bloomfield (22-20), allowing three earned runs on nine hits with two strikeouts and seven walks.
Hajjar and Jay Collazo had two hits apiece for the Golden Falcons as Felician won a game in the main draw of the CACC Tournament for the first time since 2006.
