Missouri State jumps past Miami
Canes fail to win tournament game for the first time since 1993
CORAL GABLES, Fla.-- Kennen Maddox drove in four runs to lead Missouri State to a 12-2 win against Miami (Fla.) in an elimination game in the Coral Gables Regional on Saturday.
Miami finished 36-23 and failed to win a tournament game for the first since since going 0-2 in the 1993 South Regional at Baton Rouge, La. In the two losses this year, the Hurricanes were outscored 22-4. Miami had won 13 consecutive regional championships when serving as the host.
Missouri State (40-21) scored seven runs in the first inning sending 11 batters to the plate off Steven Ewing (6-3), who lasted just two-thirds of an inning.
Maddox hit a two-run double in the first, an RBI double in the second, and a run-scoring single in the sixth.
Pierce Johnson (4-6) struck out seven in eight innings, Brock Chaffin had three hits and Brent Siefert drove in two runs for the Bears, who pounded out 15 hits.
Johnson surpassed Chad Mulholland's nine-year-old school record of 117 strikeouts in a single season, finishing the afternoon with 119 for the year. His seven-strikeout day pushed the Bears' season total to 534 punchouts, which eclipsed a program record for team strikeouts in a season as well.
