UF rolls to Gainesville Regional title
Zunino, Pigott have four RBIs each as Gators blast Georgia Tech
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Top-seeded Florida got a pair of two-run singles in the first inning, then blew things open with a three-run homer from Mike Zunino in the second en route to a 15-3 rout of Georgia Tech on Sunday to capture the Gainesville Regional before 3,537 at McKethan Stadium.
With the win, Florida (45-18) advanced to next weekend’s Super Regional round, where the Gators will face the Raleigh Region winner -- either North Carolina State or Vanderbilt -- in a best-of-three series, with the survivor advancing to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb.
UF, which won its three regional games by a combined 25-5 wasted no time in routing the Yellow Jackets (38-26). Tech starter Jake Davies walked both Preston Tucker and Zunino in the first inning, with both scoring on Daniel Pigott’s double down the first-base line.
After Casey Turgeon walked, both he and Pigott moved into scoring position when Davies’ errant pick-off move to second went into centerfield. Justin Shaker’s two-single made it 4-0.
In the second, Zunino’s wicked line drive into the left-field bleachers made it 7-0. The Yellow Jackets, champions of the ACC tournament, weren’t going to come back from that deficit with Brian Johnson (8-4) on the mound; not after having to scratch out a 3-0 loser’s bracket win against College of Charleston earlier in the day.
Johnson, in fact, was lifted to start the sixth after giving up just three hits and with a 15-1 lead after the Gators erupted for seven runs in fifth.
