ARIZONA QUICK HITS … ► Arizona is making its seventh appearance in the College World Series championship round, though its first in the new best-of-three format which started up in the 21st Century. The Wildcats have finished runner-up three times (1956, 1959 and 1963) and won three national championships. ► The last time the Wildcats won their first three CWS games was in 1986, when UA started 3-0, dropped a 4-2 decision to Miami (Fla.) and defeated Florida State 10-2 in the national championship game. ► Arizona has won 16 of its last 18 games dating back to early May. The Wildcats have hit .325 during those games, and have outscored opponents 41-11 in two-out RBI. On the mound, UA hurlers have a 2.78 ERA, 109 strikeouts and just 43 walks in 165.0 innings pitched. Starters have combined for seven complete games in those 18 contests. |
SOUTH CAROLINA QUICK HITS … ► Reliever Matt Price set a CWS record with his fifth career victory. He broke a tie with 10 other pitchers who each had four career wins. Price extended his record in games finished at the CWS as he closed his 11th game, and now ranks second with 12 career appearances. ► South Carolina has also allowed four runs or less in every game of the NCAA tournament this year. The last team to make it to the CWS and complete its showing without giving up more than four runs in any NCAA Tournament game was Miami (Fla.) in 1982. That year, Miami swept the Atlantic Regional with wins against Stetson (18-2), South Florida (9-4) and Stetson again (15-3) before going 5-0 in the CWS (wins of 7-2 vs. Maine, 4-3 vs. Wichita State, 2-1 vs. Texas, 10-4 vs. Maine and 9-3 vs. Wichita State).
