Benjamin leads way as Randolph-Macon upsets No. 8 Christopher Newport
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Led by a balanced offensive attack, Randolph-Macon defeated No. 8 Christopher Newport 11-8 on Thursday.
Tim Benjamin fueled the offense, collecting four hits and four RBI, including a solo home run. Matt Fischgrund, Jeb Weymouth and Michael Trentham also tallied two hits for Randolph-Macon (3-1).
Sid Harvey picked up his first win of the year for the Yellow Jackets, tossing two scoreless innings while striking out two. Will Jennings closed the door, striking out three in 1.1 innings to earn his first collegiate save.
Randolph-Macon started hot, scoring three runs in the third and fourth innings. Daniel Byrd gave the Jackets a solid start on the mound, hurling three innings of one-run ball.
Christopher Newport (5-1) rallied to tie it at 7-7 entering the eighth. The Yellow Jackets then scored three in the inning, taking control of the game.
Billy Steel led the Captains offensively, posting two hits while driving in three. Matt Verdillo took the loss for Christopher Newport.
