CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — No. 15 Oklahoma improved to 7-0 to open up its season thanks to a 3-1 triumph against Iowa in the first game of the 2013 Kleberg Bank College Classic on Friday at Whataburger Field.
Junior left-handed starting pitcher and preseason All-American Dillon Overton tossed eight shutout frames, fanning nine for the Sooners (7-0) to stifle Iowa’s (1-3) bats. Overton gave up seven scattered hits and did not issue a walk in the winning effort.
Sophomore righty Robert Tasin gave up a run on two hits but picked up his second career save.
Iowa starting pitcher Sasha Kuebel also pitched eight innings and surrendered two earned runs in the loss.
The game was knotted at zero until the top of the sixth when Max White opened the scoring with an RBI groundout.
Senior Jack Mayfield led the way at the plate with three hits, while senior White went 1-for-4 with two runs driven in.
