Adams' five innings of scoreless relief lifts Tampa past Barry in series opener
MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- No. 7 Tampa defeated Barry 6-4 in the first game of their three-game conference series.
The Spartans improved to 25-4 with a 8-2 Sunshine State Conference mark while the Bucs dipped to 20-12 with a 6-7 SSC record
Tampa took an early lead in the first inning after scoring three runs thanks to three walks issued by Barry starter Calvin Rayburn. The Spartans then added two runs in the top of the second off a Tyler Ding triple.
Barry battled back in the home half of the second inning with four runs off six Buccaneer hits. Barry threatened again in the bottom of the fifth, but were silenced as reliever Mike Adams tossed the final five innings to earn his third win of the season. He struck out eight batters without allowing a hit in a dominant relief appearance.
Corner infielder Jake Schrader led all players with a 3-for-5 performance while sophomore Stephen Dezzi notched a multi-hit game with a single and a double for the Spartans.
