Pettibone pitches UCSB past Texas A&M to open NCAA play at Corvallis Regional
CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Austin Pettibone scattered two runs on seven hits in 7.2 innings and UC Santa Barbara opened the NCAA tournament with a 6-4 victory against Texas A&M at the Corvallis Regional on Friday.
The Gauchos (35-24) went up 1-0 in the second inning before adding two more runs in the third on a hit-and-run RBI single by Woody Woodward and an error by Texas A&M center fielder Krey Bratsen.
The Aggies (32-28) got on the board with Mikey Reynolds' RBI double, but the Gauchos chased Aggies starter Daniel Mengden (8-4) in the fourth with two more runs to take a 5-1 lead after four innings.
UCSB closer Dylan Hecht gave up RBI singles to Krey Bratsen and Jace Statum to cut the lead to 6-4 with one out in the ninth. But Reynolds fouled out and Blake Alleman struck out to end it.
Pettibone (10-3) struck out six.
