Virginia blanks Elon behind solid start from Silverstein; one win from supers
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Scott Silverstein and two relievers scattered eight hits and Virginia beat Elon 2-0 on Saturday to move within one victory of advancing to the super regionals of the NCAA tournament.
Silverstein (10-1) allowed six hits in six innings, striking out six and walking two, before Josh Sborz worked the seventh and Kyle Crockett finished for his 12th save. Spencer Medick (7-7) went all the way for the Phoenix, allowing nine hits.
Virginia scored in the fourth when Nick Howard singled, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and scored on Kelly Towns' double. Nate Irving's single made it 2-0, and the Cavaliers pitchers made it stand up.
Silverstein stranded two runners three times, and Crockett allowed a one-out single in the ninth, but struck out Chris Bresnahan and pinch-hitter Tyler McVicar to end it.
Elon will play UNC Wilmington in an elimination game Sunday, with the winner facing Virginia.
