Baumgartner keeps Oregon alive as Ducks eliminate San Francisco
EUGENE, Ore. -- Tyler Baumgartner hit a home run and scored three runs to back freshman pitcher Cole Irvin's sensational postseason debut and Oregon kept its season alive with a 6-1 victory against San Francisco on Sunday in the Eugene regional.
The Ducks (47-15), the No. 8 national seed, play Rice later Sunday. They lost to the Owls 1-0 on Saturday. The Dons (35-24) were eliminated with the loss.
Irvin (12-3) gave up a leadoff homer to Justin Maffei in the top of the first inning, then settled down to pitch a six-hitter with nine strikeouts and no walks.
The Ducks tied the score in the third inning when Baumgartner opened with a single off San Francisco starter Alex Balog and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Mitchell Tolman. Shaun Case hit a go-ahead solo home run in the fourth, before Baumgartner's homer in the fifth.
