Mississippi State starting pitcher Trevor Fitts struck out the first two batters of the game, but Kevin Kramer reached on a swinging third strike when the ball hit catcher Nick Ammirati in the mask and bounded away. Kramer reached without a throw and moved to third on Eric Filia's double. Pat Valaika followed with a single to center to score the first run of the game. Fitts ended up striking out three in the inning, but it's been talked about all postseason -- UCLA makes you pay for every mistake.

David Berg | UCLA | P

David Berg broke the NCAA's single-season record with his 24th save against Mississippi State. Berg went 1.2 innings in his 100th career appearance in the past two seasons -- 50 last season and 50 this year. The righty came in with two on and one out in the eighth inning and got Brett Pirtle to ground into an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play. The sidearmer pitched in UCLA's 16th consecutive postseason game going back to 2012.

Complete Story

"[The collision] was just knee to knee. I tried everything I could to get the ball in front of me. As for the pitch, it hit the elbow guard but caught a little bit of muscle. But everything's fine. So if you're wondering if I'm playing [Tuesday], the answer is yes."
-- Mississippi State first baseman Wes Rea

UCLA is only the second non-conference team to beat Mississippi State in 2013. Central Arkansas was the only team to beat the Bulldogs all year -- twice in the regular season and once in the NCAA tournament -- until Monday night.

Mississippi State falls to 52-18 after suffering its first loss at the 2013 College World Series. The Bulldogs need to win Tuesday's Game 2 in order to kep their season alive and force a Game 3 on Wednesday.

UCLA improves to 48-17 and moves to 9-0 in the postseason. With one win in the next two games, the Bruins will win their first baseball national championship.
