Greensboro, N.C. (3/5/10) — Rhett Bonner scored 28 points, including 8 three-pointers, to pace No. 3-ranked Guilford College to an 83-59 home victory over Christopher Newport University (Va.) in the first round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Championship March 5.
The Quakers advance to a second-round matchup with John Carroll University (Ohio) March 6 at 7 p.m. The Blue Streaks defeated Maryville (Tenn.) College 88-67 in the other first-round game. Guilford won an NCAA third-round game at John Carroll 78-73 last season.
Leading by only 43-35 with less than a minute elapsed in the second half, Guilford went on a 13-2 run over the next three minutes to take a 56-37 advantage. Clay Henson’s layup at the 15:42 mark capped the run.
The Quakers then pulled away for good on a 16-5 run fueled by four three-pointers including two by Bonner. A pair of free throws by Tyler Sanborn with 6:27 left pushed the lead to 74-49.
Bonner scored 14 points in each half as he equaled his season-high point total. He hit 8-of-10 shots from behind the arc (the Quakers were 12-for-15). Sanborn added 16 points and 17 rebounds-his 26th double-double of the season. Henson added 11 points and Brad Monroe, a career-high 10 rebounds.
Conley Taylor led Christopher Newport with 15 points and Mark Blasingame added 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Guilford improves to 27-2 by winning its ninth NCAA Tournament game in 12 tries over four seasons. The Quakers finished third nationally last year. They are on an eight-game winning streak including three victories to capture the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament last weekend.
Christopher Newport finished 15-13. They earned an NCAA berth by upsetting top-seeded N.C. Wesleyan College in the USA South Tournament finals.
