PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — Nick Allen made two free throws with four seconds left to lead the University of Wisconsin-Platteville men’s basketball team to a 57-56 win against No. 9 UW-Stevens Point on Wednesday night at Bo Ryan Court.
UW-Platteville (10-5, 3-3 WIAC) had the ball with 17 seconds left and Nick Allen began a drive to the hoop when the Pointers’ Dan Tillema was whistled for a foul. The 83-percent free throw shooter from Barneveld calmly sank two free throws to put the Pioneers ahead.
UW-Stevens Point (11-3, 4-2 WIAC) had a chance at a last-second shot when Jerrel Harris drove the length of the court but his layup came up short.
The Pioneers’ were led by Brett Stangel, who had 14 points on the strength of four 3 pointers in the win. Nick Allen added 10, including the game-winning free throws for his 14th game in double figures on the season. The Pointers were led by Tillema, who scored 10 points in the defeat.
UW-Platteville trailed for the entire first half and the early moments of the second half until back-to-back 3 pointers by Stangel put the Pioneers in front for the first time. The Pointers came back and took the lead for most of the half but it was when Stangel hit a jumper at the 4:30 mark to tie the game at 48. Stangel also hit a clutch 3 pointer with the shot clock winding down to tie the game at 52.
Dan Tillema put the Pointers up, 56-55, with 1:22 left in the game. The Pioneers had an opportunity to take the lead but they missed a pair of free throws with 25 seconds left. Tillema missed the front end of a one-in-one and Eric Wall came down with the rebound to set the stage for the game-winning free throws by Nick Allen.
Next up for the Pioneers is a three-game road swing to start with a trip to WIAC leader University of Wisconsin-River Falls at 4 p.m.
