UNCP wins rebound battle by 10 but Jags’ 16-4 spurt shuts door

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- No. 3 Augusta State registered its 17th consecutive victory against UNC Pembroke Monday night with a 73-54 Peach Belt Conference win in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
Jaguar senior guard George Johnson drilled a season-high six 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 23 points. Sophomore guard Ben Purser connected on 8-of-11 shot attempts for 19 points and senior forward Franck Ndongo just missed his fifth double-double of the season, booking 13 points, nine rebounds, four assists and two steals.
With the win, the third-ranked Jags extended their home winning streak to 43 consecutive and their PBC home winning streak to 31 in a row. The win marked the 299th career victory for ASU coach Dip Metress.
The victory improved ASU to 21-2 overall and 11-2 in the PBC. The Braves, who are guaranteed of their first winning season since 1999-2000, fell to 14-8 and 7-7, respectively.
Nate Priest scored 10 points off the bench to pace UNCP, which outrebounded the Jags 38-28 but shot just 38.9 percent for the game and suffered 18 turnovers.
ASU shot just 35.7 percent from the field in the first half en route to a 28-19 halftime lead. The Jags then opened the second half with 16-4 run with Johnson's trey capping the spurt for a 46-23 lead with 13:31 remaining.
UNCP inched within 13 at the 4:46 mark on a jumper by Marcus Heath, but could get no closer. Johnson responded with three consecutive 3-pointers and ASU built its advantage to as much as 23 with 10:03 left.
The Jags shot 44.9 percent for the game and connected on 11-of-23 3-point attempts, their second-best effort behind the arc this season.
