Marquette’s Williams gets new deal
Following Sweet 16 run this season, Williams nets extension
MILWAUKEE -- Marquette is rewarding coach Buzz Williams with a new contract after he led the Golden Eagles on their longest NCAA tournament run since 2003.
The school said Wednesday it has finalized a new deal with Williams, who led Marquette on a surprising run to the round of 16 before they were beaten by North Carolina.
The announcement presumably takes Williams’ name out of the running for other high-profile programs looking for a new head coach. Williams was a relative unknown when he took over in the wake of Tom Crean’s departure for Indiana in 2008, but he has gained national respect for leading Marquette to three consecutive NCAA tournaments.
