Calipari to coach Dominican team
Dominican Republic has never qualified for the Olympics
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic -- Kentucky’s John Calipari has been chosen to coach the national team of the Dominican Republic and try to qualify it for the 2012 Olympics.
Federation general manager Eduardo Najri said the choice was made official Thursday.
The Dominican Republic has never qualified for the Olympics in men’s basketball.
Calipari posted on his website that he has formally accepted the head coaching position.
He has said he would spend about six weeks with the team from August through mid-September, preparing it for the Tournament of the Americas.
