Notebook: Triple Digits
TRIPLE DIGITS: Senior guard Ryan Diggs poured in 29 points and dished out nine assists as No. 4 Western Washington cruised to a 101-78 win over Eastern Oregon on Dec. 12. The Vikings set a school record by posting their fourth straight 100-point game while winning their fifth consecutive game.
Senior forward Grant Dykstra and senior center Tyler MacMullen also pitched in double-figures, scoring 24 and 21 points, respectively. Dykstra now ranks seventh on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,377, while Diggs follows in eighth place with 1,335 points.
Western is averaging 102.7 points, 9.9 rebounds and 4.0 blocked shots per game with a 23.4 scoring margin. Diggs and Dykstra are the Great Northwest Athletic Conference's top two scorers with 25.3 and 21.6 points per game, respectively.
HE SHOOTS, HE SCORES: Eddie Peterson of Indiana University (Pa.) was on fire last week as he averaged 39.0 points per game in victories over Juniata and Wheeling Jesuit.
Peterson, a guard from McKees Rocks, Pa., scored 42 points in an 81-79 win against Juniata on Dec. 7, rallying IUP from an 18-point deficit with 14 points in the final six minutes and making the game-winning three-pointer. He followed it up with a 36-point performance in IUP's 95-92 overtime victory against Wheeling Jesuit on Dec. 10.
Peterson averaged a 65.9 shooting percentage and 5.5 rebounds in the two games to earn Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Player of the Week for his stellar play. He also tied the school's all-time steal record at 204 during the week. The senior leads the conference with 27.9 points per game.
700 CLUB: No. 25 Cal State Bakersfield came back from a 12-point deficit to defeat Grand Canyon University, 77-74, on Dec. 13 to win the program's 700th game. The Roadrunners are 700-284 in 35 seasons of men's basketball.
Junior guard Dwuan Rice scored a game-high 24 points and dished out seven assists to help the Roadrunners stop Grand Canyon's eight-game winning streak.
The Roadrunners entered the NABC Division II Coaches' Top 25 in the No. 25 spot on Tuesday before extending their season start to 5-0 with the win over the Antelopes.
NOTABLE: Southwest Baptist University moved up 11 spots in the latest national poll to No. 13 after improving its record to 10-0 with an overtime victory against Truman State in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association last week. This year's squad is just the third team in school history to start 10-0 and now boast their highest ranking since the 1990-91 season ... Southern Indiana's Melvin Hall garnered Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week as the Screaming Eagles swept Wisconsin-Parkside and Lewis University last week. Hall, a junior guard from Evansville, Ind., averaged 16.0 points and 6.5 rebounds per game while posting a 50.0 shooting percentage ... Junior Daniel Blair tallied 17.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game to lead Pittsburg State in a pair of victories over Missouri Western and Avila (Mo.) last week. He contributed a career-high 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the Gorillas' MIAA opener against Missouri Western on Dec. 10. The Gorillas have won five straight games after starting the season 0-5.
