BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Brandon Larrieu scored 24 points Friday, including the last four of the game to secure Seattle Pacific’s 82-77 upset of 23rd-ranked Western Washington in the first round of the NCAA Division II men’s basketball tournament at Carver Gymnasium.
 
The No. 7 seed Falcons (19-9) advance into a second-round meeting with No. 3 seed Cal Poly Pomona, Saturday at 7 p.m. in Bellingham. The Broncos defeated Cal State San Bernardino 83-81 in the opening round.
 
SPU trailed 67-64 before reeling off eight unanswered points to take the lead for good. Casey Reed started the surge with a 3-pointer.

Jeff Downs followed with a layup and was fouled. He was unable to complete the three-point play, but teammate Rafael Moreira rebounded the missed free throw and passed it to Downs who immediately hit a 3-pointer to put the Falcons ahead 72-67 with 4:50 left to play.
 
The second-seeded Vikings (21-6) rallied and drew within 78-77 on a pair of free throws from Ira Graham with 30 seconds remaining. Larrieu answered with two free throws and capped the scoring on a fastbreak layup with 10 seconds to play.
 
Downs finished with 19 points for SPU and Moreira had 14.
 
Graham, the Great Northwest Athletic Conference player of the year, poured in 29 points to pace WWU. Steve Alford added 11 and Calin Schell 10.
